As a deck cadet, I know that having a positive attitude and a strong professional mindset is essential for my development and success in the maritime industry. I’m eager to learn and understand that my time as a cadet is a valuable opportunity to gain knowledge from the experienced officers and crew members around me. I also try to stay adaptable because conditions at sea can change quickly, and being able to adjust to new environments and tasks is important.
Being a team player is something I focus on as well. Working on a ship requires collaboration, and I make an effort to be cooperative, respectful, and supportive of my colleagues. I also recognize the importance of clear communication—whether it’s reporting to officers, coordinating with the crew, or following safety procedures.
I know the work can be physically demanding and the hours can be long, so resilience and patience are important qualities for me. Staying disciplined, following the rules, and taking responsibility for my actions are things I strive to do every day. I make sure to prioritize safety and follow all safety procedures because maintaining a safe working environment is a key part of my role.
I also focus on having a strong work ethic and paying attention to detail in everything I do. Whether it's maintenance, navigation, or daily tasks, I know that being thorough and dedicated will help me grow. Respecting the chain of command and learning from those with more experience is important to me, and I try to maintain professionalism in all my interactions, both with my colleagues and senior officers.
Lastly, I’m committed to continuous improvement. I view my time as a cadet as an opportunity to learn and develop, and I know that being proactive about gaining new skills and knowledge will set me up for success in the future.
